Summary, etc. Catarman derived its name from the Turkish word "atar" which means oil of the roses and "inman" or "oman", synonym for Muslim Holoy men. The strategic location of Catarman and its comparatively better socioeconomic activities played an important role in the direction it is taking now. When the province of Samar was divided into three provinces by virtue or R.A. 4221 dated June 19, 1965. Catarman was chosen as the Provincial Capital. When the province of Northern Samar was establish as a separate dioceses from Samar to Eastern Samar, again it was chosen as the seat of the dioceses. Catarman strides the province and its bounded on the east by Mondragon, on the west by Bobon, on the south by Lope de Vega, on the north by Pacific Ocean. There are at present 56 barangays, 15 of them in the poblacion within its relatively large Municipal Jurisdiction.
