Summary: As I was in the midst of collecting data for this book, I was also involved in the not very exciting task of proofreading the galleys of the second edition of The Effective Principal (Blumberg and Greenfield, 1986). Fairly early in the proof-reading, I recall remarking, with surprise, first to myself and then to my wife, that many of the thoughts about the practice of school administration that I was now starting to conceive of in craft terms were expressed in that book, but in a different language. In some way that I don't quite understand, what Greenfield and I wrote about the work and thinking of some out-of-the-ordinary school principals was foundational to developing the idea for this one.
