Summary: Rehabilitation is a big word with many meaning. It is a relatively new word. For even though it is derived from Latin word, no word of similar spelling was found in ancient Rome. The root "habil" means able, and the simplest definition of the word is to make able again. The term has its origin in the civil or canon law of the Middle Ages. Its common meaning then was the restoration of a baron or knight to his former right rank or privilege after such had been lost or forfeited. Later the term encompassed also of ones reputation by the clearing of unjust charges. A re-establishment of ones good name.
