In the design of spacious churches great emphasis has in the past been placed on lofty aisle vaults, long trancepts and voluminous side chapels, with the result that the resonant note of the choir is often different form of the nave and reverberation and delayed reflection make difficult the clear delivery of prayers and sermons.
