Summary: [Article Title: Burnout or Compassion Fatigue: A comparisom of concepts/ J.Sheree Henson, p.77-81] Abstract: Burnout and compassion fatigue (CF) are prevalent across heatlhcare professions, but particularly within nursing. Both are detrimental to nurses' professional quality of life (PQoL) (Magtibay et al., 2017).They contribute to nearly 20% of nurses leaving a position in the first year and many leaving nursing professional (Kelly & Todd, 2017).Because definition of burnout and CF are inconsistent, the relationship between the two is unclear (Elkonin & Van der Vyver, 2011; Sabo, 2011).;[Article Title: Lurking in the Shadows: Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency/ Erik Southard, Emily Cannon, Renee Bauer and Nicole Heck, p. 96-100] Abstract: Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is a genetic disorder that may result in lung disease or liver disease. As highlighted in this case study, AATD may be underdiagnosed due to lack of continuity of care. Affected patients should be educated on the importance of prevention and follow-up care.;[Article Title: Understanding Clopidogrel Antiplatelet Theraphy/ Shelley Carter and Rhea Faye D. Felicilda Reynaldo, p. 101-103] Abstract: Clopidogrel is a P2Y inhibitor effective in reducing the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and other thromboembolic events. Nurses should incorporate appropriate nursing actions and patient teaching in their plans of care to help patients remian safe and free of adverse events while taking medication.;[Article Title: Reducing Nursing Staff's Stress through an Update to an Inpatient Admission Process/ Katelyn Andrzejewski, p. 105-108] Abstract: The goal of this project was to determine the level of stress experienced by nurses when admitting a new patient. Simple changes to the admission process, with a focus on task completion, led to decreased stress, increased perception of support, and increased staff satisfaction.;[Article Title: The Impact of the Nurse Navigator on Patients on a Colorectal Surgery Pathway/ Kelsie Bordonada, Sharon Davo-Otomo, Maria Elena Zucker and Hand Saito, p. 109-114] Abstract: Nurse navigators have emerged recently to address the changing healthcare system and further focus on patient needs. This study found education of patients by nurse navigators can help manage patients' expectations and contribute to improved adherence to the Enhanced Recovery after surgery pathway.;[Article Title: Macerations, Induration, Excoriation: What Do These Words mean?/ Katherine Mehaffey, p. 115-116] Abstract: Wound assessment by its nature is both objective and subjective. By using the electronic medical record terminology provided in the most accurate, standardized, consistent manner, nurses can help develop an appropriate, timely treatment plan.;[Article Title: Building Nonverbal Skills for Trustworthiness and Leadership/ Donna J. Middaugh, p. 117-118] Abstract: How can we be sure we appear to our teams the way we intend? It all comes down to being trusted leaders and managers. Taking note of our work surroundings and the subtle nonverbal clues of our coworkers can increase our mindfulness and effectiveness as managers.;[Article Title: The Tale of Two Fibs: The Value of Assessing Symptoms and Collecting Medical Histories in Patients with New-Onset Atrial Fibrillation/ Dillon J. Dzikowicz and Mary G. Carey, p. 119-122] Abstract: Atrial fibrillation is a common cardiac arrhythmia that greatly varies in patient presentation and symptomatology. Nurses can assess patients, record symptoms, monitor heart rate and rhythm, and implement risk-reduction strategies.;[Article Title: Rheumatoid Arthritis/ Alysa Angel, p. 123-124] Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) affects over 1% of the populations (Parker & Elam, 2017; Roberts, 2016). RA is a chronic disease of autoimmune system leading to advancing joint deformity with periods of exacerbation and remission (Roberts, 2016). It affects more women then men (Duncan, 2015; Roberts, 2016).;[Article Title: Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria/ Lynne M. Connelly, p. 125-126] Abstract: Researchers use inclusion and exclusion criteria to determine characteristics of the subjects or elements in a study. Establishing theses criteria for subjects is an important step in designing high-quality research.;[Article Title: Epistaxis: A Closer Look/ Mary L. Schreiber, p. 126-128] Abstract: Epistaxis (nosebleed) has numerous etiologies. Determining the cause and intervening promptly and effectively can prevent serious complications. Patient education is essential to promote safe self-care for the patient at risk for epistaxis.;[Article Title: Application of Betty Neuman System Theory in Management of Pressure Injury in Patients Following Stroke/ Zohreh Vanaki and Hossein Rafiei, p. 129-134] Abstract: Pressure injury (PI) is a remarkable problem among patients following stroke. The Neuman System Theory can be applied by nurses to manage PI in patients following stroke. The emphasis of this theory on prevention levels, especially primary and tertiary prevention, has made it compatible with standard PI guidelines.
