Abstract: Linguist’s Assistant (LA) is a large scale semantic analyzer and multi-lingual natural language generator (NLG) designed and developed entirely from a linguist’s perspective. The system incorporates extensive typological, semantic, syntactic, and discourse research into its semantic representational system and its transfer and synthesizing grammars. LA has been tested extensively with English, Korean, Kewa (Papua New Guinea), and Jula (Cote d’Ivoure), and proof of concept lexicons and grammars have been developed for Spanish, Urdu, North Tanna (Vanuatu), Angas (Nigeria), and Chinantec (Mexico). LA is presently being used to build a lexicon and grammar for Tagalog. This paper will (i) summarize the major components of the NLG system, (ii) discuss how a significant portion of the Tagalog grammar was gleaned and constructed automatically from a specially designed corpus, and (iii) present the results of experiments that were performed to determine the quality of the generated Tagalog texts. The experiments indicate that when experienced mother-tongue translators use the drafts generated by LA, their productivity is more than tripled without any loss of quality.

Abstract: Internationalization is an offshoot of globalization in education. It covers teaching, research, and networking. Although it is recognizably associated with outbound mobility, it comes with another variant that is deemed favorable to universities, which could not depend on any form of subsidy or support from their respective governments. Internationalization at Home or IaH focuses on campus-based strategies that highlight internationalization of citizens even when in a home campus. This paper argues that internationalization happens when there is a clear direction from the university administration amplified through its policy and mandate. That policy can consolidate the efforts of different colleges towards quality, relevant and meaningful education. To exemplify, National University (NU) and its development measures were considered and pointed out. NU adopted mechanisms that characterize IaH such as: offering courses that parallel international courses on environmental engineering and digital forensics; engaging fully in the field of research by benchmarking its potentials with international standards; and, enhancing its networking and or partnership strategies through dynamic alumni and aggressive industries linkages. Thus, NU could be a university in the Philippines that can jumpstart internationalization through IaH.

Abstract: Current work is on the development of a word editor plug-in that provides Filipino translations for Beki words or gay lingo words. A known sociolect, Beki speak – as described in literature – is used as a form of code-mixing; shielding speakers from non-speakers. For this work, we focused on Twitter as the domain, which is a representative example of the sociolect’s usage. A rule-based engine was used for the translator and the needed language resources – rule file, trigram model, and word list – were developed and detailed in the paper. Tweets from year 2013 were used and various resources were utilized to develop the needed language resources; in particular, the schema provided by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino was used. The plug-in was evaluated for recall and results show less than 50 percent recall rate. Although promising, the result can also be interpreted as scarcity of available digital Beki resources and that the sociolect constantly evolves. The work can be extended by providing a toolkit for users to easily add rules and descriptions.

Abstract: De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde’s Center for Educational Access and Development in partnership with the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management offers Certificate and Food and Beverage Service. This program aims to provide an environment for deaf students to develop their service skills and confidence. In the present study, accessible support services and methods of teaching used by faculty members for deaf and hard of hearing were described and evaluated. A qualitative method was used to analyze the gathered data from the focus group discussion. Eight deaf students participated in the discussion. Consequently, five distinct themes emerged from the data namely meeting deaf needs, inclusivity, achieving academic goals, program enhancement, and level of understandings a result.
