The story follows a College Professor named Peter Proud, wracked by vivid dreams, bordering on hallucinations. Intent on trying to figure them out, he first goes to a psychic, then begins working with a parapsychologist, named Hall Bentley. Proud winds up going back to New England to follow up on some leads. What he discovers is as shocking, as it is disastrous.
